The program is currently working with a budget of $78,000.00. With a larger budget and more funding we would be able to increase the services we offer and the number of youth we serve. Because of space unfortunately, the program is currently set up in a way that only a few services can be going at the same time. For instance when there is a teen parent class going on the recreation room has to be closed and youth would have to find other things to do at this time. We try to schedule the various classes and events accordingly but we need to expand our space in order to appropriately help the youth. We don’t like to close doors or turn them away.
Transportation Funds- $57,000.
Again the disadvantage to the area is no public transportation, and since the population we serve are poverty stricken they cannot afford cars. Its wonderful to offer all these services but if the youth cannot get to the facility we cannot help them. So we are currently seeking funding for transportation. We are in need of 2, 15 passenger vans to transport the youth to and from the facility. Funding for this will also include insurance and maintenance of the vehicles. This vehicle will also be used to assure youth in the teen parent program are attending medical and school appointments. As well as be used to take the youth on cultural and social trips within the organization such as to museums, parks and other outings. The van will follow a strict schedule and would stop at certain areas through out the town. The youth will learn responsibility by meeting the bus at the appointed times to get to the center and home.
Space modification - $269,542.00
We have just purchased 2 buildings in Curwensville, Pennsylvania. Although the buildings are currently being utilized it is in need of some additions and repairs.
1. Our first priority is The Kitchen and Cafeteria. The kitchen will serve several purposes. It will allow us to open a soup kitchen. Currently we offer a small snack to youth who attend the support meetings as well as those who attend right after school. But we strongly feel that youth who are able to get proper nutrition and a hot healthy meal are able to function better. We also prepare large holiday dinners for the youth and their families. The kitchen will act as a class room to teach our teen parents and those youth learning independent living skills as well as any other youth who is interested, proper cooking techniques. Youth will learn to safely prepare healthy meals as well as learn cake decorating and catering skills. And finally it will allow us to get a restaurant license which will bring further funding to the center and offer youth an opportunity to work and gain job skills.
2. Next we want to build a Computer Lab and Homework room. To support the educational and employment supports we offer we want to add a computer room to the facility. This room will house 5 computers, printers and other computer resources. It will also have books, calculators, and other supplies youth would need to complete home work, Study, do job searches, do research or just safely search the net or play computer games. Although this room will offer privacy for studying it will be a well supervised room and a staff member will be present at all times when the room is in use. This room will also be made available to the adults in the community while youth are in school, for such things as job searches and learning and enhancing computer skills. We live in a world of technology. Everyone should know how to properly and safely use a computer.
3. Also we want to add Accessibility to the buildings. We also serve the population of youth with disabilities. As the buildings currently stand they are able to use the facility but not to the fullest extent. We want to make it comfortable for all youth, and make all youth welcome to our services. One of our volunteers from the community uses a wheelchair and she is limited to what she could do with the youth in the buildings because of it.
4. And lastly Staff and Other space. We want to make sure our staff has a place to call their own. We also want to have office space for our youth to be able to speak with staff in private about issues that may be going on in their lives without the fear of it being over heard by other youth. We need to have proper training and meeting space for the staff as well. There is also a need for a large multi purpose recreation room. One of the purposes for the recreation would be to have a skating rink and indoor basket ball court to promote exercise. As the center stands now it is one level. We would like to make it a two level property. We want to maintain the grounds outside and around the buildings itself. To add something as simple as a outdoor playground would be a great asset to the community and give the youth something to do.
General Operational support - $187,200.00.
As our program and services grows so does our needs. We will hire more staff and incur more expenses. We will need supports with salaries, background checks for personnel, food for meetings and soup kitchen, school supplies, gas, bills, speakers and various other items. Basic upkeep of the buildings. And proper maintaining of the grounds. Board of directors expenses, travel, utilities and equipment.
Non monetary funding
There is also always a great need for non monetary assistance. This is in the form of volunteers or in kind services. We can always use professionals who are able to teach various skills as well as offer life’s lessons. Even someone who is just willing to sit and play a board game or read a book to the youth. We are greatly in need of established adults, celebrities and sports heroes to be an encouragement to the youth. New clothing from Newborn to teen.
Future Projects
We want to add a GED program to our services which will assist youth in completing their education. We are seeking to expand our services to other inner cities. We are seeking funding for our independent living center. This center will house youth who are aging out of the fostercare system, teen parents or are homeless. The center will start by providing a safe environment for youth to live to which they will be taught various independent living skills such as cooking, hygiene, proper healthcare and its importance as well as promote healthy eating and exercise habits, budgeting and other life needed skills. The center will provide youth with appropriate education including High school or G.E.D. completion and on to job training courses which will include nursing, cosmetology, business management, culinary, fashion, and film and audio courses. We will also educate youth on the effects of drug and alcohol usage, safe sex and abstinence. We will even offer an onsite childcare facility for the teen parents and employees of the program. Youth will stay at the center for no less than 18 months and will graduate upon completion of all courses and when it is felt they are emotionally ready as well. There will be lifetime and continued supports provided by means of support groups and having youth who have completed the program mentor youth who are currently in the program. |
